FORETHOUGHT

"The spring of 2020 has been a season of transition. Across the United States the realities of COVID-19, the Black Lives Matters movement and the call for economic equity has created both room for rebellion and contemplation. Photographers are documentarians as a result of their creativity viewers have access to an incredible archive of our time. Forethought is an exhibition that highlights the nature in which photographers have been documenting their lives, and communities during the spring of 2020. Because of their careful consideration, and eye for documentation, and forethought these artists will help shape what future generations will understand about the unique moment that we are currently living though."

Jova Lynne is a transdisciplinary artist and curator. Lynne is interested in the parallels between fictional, historical and personal archive in identity development.. Solo Show at Detroit Shipping Company

Shooting from the chest without looking at his camera’s viewfinder, adjusting the focus from intuition alone, Detroit-based street photographer Brian Ho chronicles scenes of a downtown in its early days of the Covid shutdowns – in the raw, no filter.

Perpetually in pursuit of elevating his unique technique, Ho finds immediacy in his frames through a hands-on sensibility informed by his background as an Engineer. “I buy my cameras broken and cheap, I take them apart and fix them,” the artist explains, “film photography attracts me because it’s so tactile.”

His affinity for the analog has also led him to commit to creative limitations centered around building skill with affordable tools. “I like to make a challenge for myself. If it turns out beautifully, I appreciate it more deeply because of the hours and hours of mistakes made honing that technique.”

Ho’s collection for the galleries at Detroit Shipping Company capture a distinct void, a sense of space where there was once liveliness. Even in eerie emptiness we collectively recount in remembering the Spring of 2020, the photographer-engineer uncovers focal points filled with imagination and mystery. “I always like the idea of less clutter. There’s so much to distract, but even on a busy street, I like to find one subject or one person, and focus on that person’s story, connecting them with where I am emotionally and how I want to portray what I'm feeling. The self-reflection of it is therapeutic for me.”
