What is Downtown Boxing Gym?

The Downtown Boxing Gym is a free after-school academic and athletic program that provides Detroit students (ages 8-18) with the tools they need to succeed. DBG has a 100% high school graduation rate since 2007, when opened. Through tutoring, mentorship, enrichment programs, college and career prep, social-emotional skills building, basic needs support (transportation and meals) and so much more, training kids for life.

How They Serve

The Downtown Boxing Gym currently serves more than 150 students between the ages of 8 and 18. Students come from 30 different zip codes and 57 schools across Detroit and nearby suburbs.

Downtown Boxing Gyms Mission

Through education, athletics, mentorship and intervention, the Downtown Boxing Gym empowers Detroit students to be positive and productive members of society.

 The Downtown Boxing Gym’s fleet of vans picks up and drops off students daily to ensure that transportation is not a barrier to participation. Their vans reach every corner of the city.

Our Commitment

Before COVID hit Michigan around March 2020, Hard Gallery had a showing of Stephen McGee's group of works titled Resurgo. There was a picture there that left a big impression on us. It was a picture of a kid holding what looked like $5 or $10 bill on his forehead with the widest and most genuine smile. The caption stated “last money for the week for groceries” (not word for word).

During the first lockdown in Michigan, there was an article about a local Detroit organization trying to help a local Pizza business while supporting the kids in their organizations program with care packages containing food, basic necessities as well academic packets. This organization was Downtown Boxing Gym.

We wanted to help DBG by donating all sales of the Cancel Zine to Downtown Boxing Gym. The magazine can be purchased from the online store.
